A. Animal control shall quarantine for 45 days every dog, cat or ferret that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies and that is current on rabies vaccination. Quarantine may be on the premises of the owner at the discretion of the animal control officer; otherwise such quarantine will take place in the animal shelter or, at the owner’s expense, in a veterinary hospital. In the case of stray dogs, cats and ferrets, or in case ownership is not known, such quarantine shall be at the animal shelter.

B. Animal control shall euthanize or place into strict quarantine for 120 days every dog and cat that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies and that has never been vaccinated for rabies. If the dog or cat does not receive a rabies vaccine within 96 hours from the time of exposure or potential exposure, animal control may extend the strict quarantine period to six months.

C. Animal control shall euthanize or place into strict quarantine for six months every ferret that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies and that has never been vaccinated for rabies.

D. Animal control shall quarantine for 45 days every dog and cat that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies and that is overdue for a rabies booster vaccine and has appropriate documentation of having received a USDA-licensed rabies vaccine at least once previously. Quarantine may be on the premises of the owner at the discretion of the animal control officer; otherwise such quarantine will take place in the animal shelter or, at the owner’s expense, in a veterinary hospital. In the case of stray dogs and cats, or in case ownership is not known, such quarantine shall be at the animal shelter. If the dog or cat does not receive a rabies vaccine within 96 hours from the time of exposure or potential exposure, animal control may extend the strict quarantine period to six months.

E. Dogs and cats that have been exposed or have potentially been exposed to rabies and that are overdue for a rabies booster vaccine and do not have appropriate documentation of having received a USDA-licensed rabies vaccine at least once previously shall be quarantined and disposed of in accord with the directives of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

F. Ferrets that have been exposed or have potentially been exposed to rabies and that are overdue for a rabies booster vaccine shall be quarantined and disposed of in accord with the directives of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

G. Any animal other than a dog, cat or ferret that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies shall be quarantined and disposed of in accord with the directives of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

H. The owner, upon demand made by an animal control officer, shall forthwith surrender any animal that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies, for a supervised quarantine; and the animal may be reclaimed by the owner as specified in this chapter when adjudged to be free of rabies. No person shall fail to surrender such an animal for impound upon the demand of the animal control officer. Failure to surrender an animal pursuant to this subsection is a violation.

I. In lieu of quarantine, animals may be euthanized with or without rabies testing in accord with the directives of the Alaska Department of Health and Social Services.

J. The owner, upon demand made by an animal control officer, shall forthwith surrender any animal that has been exposed or has potentially been exposed to rabies for euthanasia and testing.

K. The owner, upon demand made by an animal control officer, shall forthwith surrender any carcass of any dead animal that has been exposed to rabies for rabies testing. (Ord. 2017-27 § 9, 2017.)
